Out of my comfort zone.....

Out of my comfort zone completely with this bright yellow, (the photos don't capture the lurid quality....)  "in your face" fabric panel of fruit sitting on long stemmed, pinky red vases.....

Hand printed on a heavy weight cotton....the end showing work in progress

Another piece of printed fabric, this time with a brown window pattern background and stylised jugs....

The reverse has numbers and writing,

Not being au fait with this type of fabric at all, I am at a bit of a loss for date....is it 50's, 60's or 70's perhaps?
Is it screen printed or block printed?
And should it happen to be a rare piece of Henry Moore or Lucienne Day how would I know?
Any advice would be very welcome.

Something I do like however, is this signed artists proof print of a cat with kittens in a basket.....

In its original oak frame, signed Clifford Webb ..."Family Life" 2/30

Unusual for me as I am most definitely a dog person....cats make me sneeze.... but I do think it is a charming subject and I love the soft colours.

Hope you all have a comfortable weekend,
Julie x

  2. Hello Julie:
Well, we love these fabrics and are amazed at all the detail they contain. The first has a rather jolly 'Carmen Miranda' feel to it, in our view, and the second has an intriguing 3-D effect background. We are most interested to see what you do with them........unless, of course, they do turn out to be the textile equivalent of a Henry Moore statue....in which case we assume that you will frame them?!!!!

  3. I would say the brown window with jugs fabric is late 50's/early 60's. The pink vase fabric looks later. Not too sure about block or screen printed, but I agree with Helen...
you are definitely on the edge Julie! :) xx

  4. out of your comfort zone but definitely INTO mine!
    I don't think they're English, and I think they're later than 50s.
If you Google Henry Moore or Lucienne Day fabrics, often the results show sales sites and it often pays to have a quick troll through, although your patterns don't look quite "atomic enough"!

  5. I kind of like the one with jugs on, it looks very 50's to me. Good luck with your research. Have a great weekend and thanks for calling, love Linda x

  7. I don't think they are by LD or HM - I went to both exhibitions of their textile works at the Pallant Gallery in Chichester and all had information in the selvedge - HM fabric was mostly printed onto raylon. His scarves though had a signature in the pattern.
Donna Flower may be able to help you as she has a huge collection of fabrics of all eras.
