Magic wallet......

Probably showing my age now..... but buying this "magic wallet" the other day brought back memories of when I was a little girl and watching the milkman collecting the money from my mother at the doorstep and putting his notes inside.

This one belonged to,
 William Nixon
Practical Engineer,
Brampton, Cumberland.

Love the title of Practical Engineer..no doubt he was a man who could turn his hand to anything.

Called a Treasury Note Case, but to me it was magical...

A banknote was laid inside....

The wallet was then closed.... and re-opened  from the other side, securing the note in place.

I was totally fascinated with this simple yet ingenious device and still am....do you remember them?

Have a good weekend,
Julie x

  2. alas, I too remember them...
Our milkman was called Tubby (very un PC) and I remember the first time he had yoghurts for sale- exceptionally sweet and pink strawberry ones and rather optimistically orange apricot flavour.
We tried them, but my dad said he wasn't going to eat sour milk and told my mum not to get them again!
Oh crumbs, I'm sounding like one of those old people now!

  3. Yes, I remember them and am still fascinated by them. We still have our milk delivered on the old traditional milk float but Brian doesn't have a magic wallet!

  6. How ingenious. Does anyone know how to make one? They'd make great presents. I've never seen such a thing.

  7. Yes! My husband has one somewhere and the children love it. It was his great uncles and it fascinated him as a youngster too.

  14. Hi Julie,
My father had a one of these and as a small child I was fascinated and thought it was a magic trick, I could never fathom out how it worked. Jsyne x

  16. In school the girls had to do needlework while the boys did craft - one day they all made a magical wallet each - and no one would tell how it worked. I was so jealous!
